Pitpit Street - Somare Circuit Intersection Upgrade

The Somare Circuit is a local collector road that links to Pitpit Street in the North Waigani suburban area in NCD. The intersection was a T-intersection and was not initially intended to redistribute large traffic volumes. The Client noted the changes due to the demographic movement and traffic demand. The link had attracted high traffic volumes during peak hours of a day. The previous T-intersection configuration posed several safety risks and could not absorb the traffic demand. Therefore a decision was made to reconfigure the T-intersection to a roundabout with several auxiliary slip lanes to assist in absorbing and regulating the traffic, reducing traffic queues and improving overall safety.

SAP & Associates were tasked by the contractor with remodeling the road geometry to meet these criteria set out by the Client. We understood that the project aimed to explore the potential impact of smarter road geometry design on daily commutes. We investigated options of how a functional layout would achieve this outcome while also considering drainage, telecom and electricity services underground and overhead together with the restricted road easement and boundaries to reducing congestion, improve safety, and attempt to make commuting more efficient and enjoyable for individuals.
